Mexico honors Guillermo Soberón Acevedo's centennial

UNAM commemorates Dr. Guillermo Soberón Acevedo, highlighting his constitutional, educational, and public health contributions.

Mexico held a ceremony to commemorate the centennial of the birth of Dr. Guillermo Soberón Acevedo. The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) organized the event to highlight the key concepts that defined his career: temperance, sense of state, scientific vision, and the conception of university autonomy as an ethical duty and institutional responsibility. Rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas emphasized that the former rector considered autonomy, education, and public health as substantial goods for national life and the development of entire generations. During the ceremony, his role in creating key institutes and centers was also noted, and during his rectorship (1973-1981), UNAM underwent profound changes in its academic, territorial, and scientific structure. The National Schools of Professional Studies (now Higher Faculties of Studies) were created, the University Cultural Center was completed, and the College of Sciences and Humanities and the National Preparatory School were strengthened. His presence was also expanded outside of Mexico City through the Northeast Regional Station in Hermosillo and the National Astronomical Observatory in San Pedro Mártir, and oceanographic vessels 'El Puma' and 'Justo Sierra' were incorporated. Soberón also made significant contributions to the country's public health, particularly by promoting the reform of Article 4 of the Constitution, which recognized the right of all Mexicans to health. His efforts were also aimed at reducing infant mortality and creating CONASIDA in response to the HIV-AIDS emergency. The event was attended by former rectors José Narro Robles and Enrique Graue Wiechers, as well as members of the university community.
